Ervin P. Zavadil

Ervin P. Zavadil, age 68, of St. Helena, Nebraska, died from cancer on Monday, February 23, 2009 at his residence.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, February 27, 2009 at 10:30 am at the Holy Family (Immaculate Conception) Catholic Church in St. Helena with Rev. Michael Keating officiating. The Wynot American Legion Post 31 will provide military services. Burial of the ashes will occur at a later date. Visitation will be on Thursday from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a rosary at 4:00 pm and a vigil service at 7:00 pm at the church. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Pallbearers will be Rod Conners, Leo Kramper, Daryl Hochstein, Melvin Loecker, Bob Behrens, Larry Hix.

Ervin was born on February 12, 1941 at Crofton, NE to George and Katherine (Loecker) Zavadil. He grew up in the Crofton and Menominee area and attended Yankton High School. He joined the Marines in 1958 and served a year and a half in the Far East. After his discharge from the Marines he moved to Pocatello, Idaho. On January 26, 1963, Ervin was married to Joyce Pechan in Pocatello. Ervin worked as a carpenter and then became employed as an instructor of carpentry with the Job Corps spending most of his time in Ponca and Chadron, NE. He retired in 2003 and he and Joyce moved to St. Helena in 2004. Ervin liked riding motorcycles, camping, woodworking, and playing cards with his family and friends. He was a member of the Holy Family (Immaculate Conception) Catholic Church in St. Helena, the Knights of Columbus, and the Carpenters Local 998 in Sioux City.

Ervin is survived by his wife, Joyce, of St. Helena; 7 children, Denise Czop of Tyler, Texas; Laurie Zavadil of Ponca; Jennifer Carnell of Blair, Nebraska; Mark Zavadil, and his wife, Cindy, of Athens, Texas; Matt Zavadil, and his wife, Heather, of Celina, Texas; Missy Chicoine, and her husband, Chad, of Ponca; Adam Zavadil of Yankton; 16 grandchildren, a sister, Gen Yonke of Idaho Falls, Idaho; 3 brothers and their wives, Lawrence and Mary Ann Zavadil of Crofton; Don and Doris Zavadil of Merrill, Idaho; and Jerome and Carolyn Zavadil of Crofton.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
