Glenn E. Pickering
Glenn Pickering, age 93, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at his home in Mission, Texas.
Funeral services are 10:30 AM, on Monday, January 19, 2009 at United Church of Christ (Congregational) in Yankton with Reverend Paul Opsahl officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Sunday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Pallbearers are Ken Pickering Jr., James Pickering, Eric Schulz, Aaron Schulz, Daniel Schulz, Aaron Wherry, Kevin Huber and Corey Highland. Honorary pallbearers are Jean Olson, Mitch Olson, Brandii Wherry, Neil Huber, Jon Huber, Tami Westcrock, Jill Aaker, Terri Young, Derrick Young, Chad Young, Angie DeThury and Katie Huber.
Glenn was born on June 13, 1915 in Laurel, Nebraska to Obie and Alice (Edmisten) Pickering. The family moved to South Dakota in March of 1928 and Glenn attended the 6th, 7th and 8th grade at Grove School. On January 2, 1936, he married Elva Cook in Yankton and they had three children: Kenneth, Gary and Carol. Glenn farmed north of Yankton and was very proud of his cattle and how they were raised. While farming, he also worked at Anderson Livestock for over 40 years. Then he worked for Wilson Seed as a salesman into his late 80s and was awarded Outstanding Salesman of the Year in 1985. Elva died on March 28, 1980 and Glenn married Gladys Nelson on September 4, 1981. They were married for nearly 12 years until Gladys's death on May 25, 1993. Then on February 13, 1995, Glenn married Violet Huber. They had many good years together and enjoyed wintering in Mission, Texas. Glenn was a member of the Yankton Elks Lodge and was Elk of the Year in 1989. He was also a member of the Yankton Moose Lodge and a member of the School Board for Pershing School District. Glenn loved to go dancing and would travel hundreds of miles to a dance. He also enjoyed traveling and fishing.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Violet Pickering of Yankton; 3 children: Kenneth (Lavonne) Pickering of Pierre, SD, Gary (Judi) Pickering of Wapello, IA and Carol (Doug) Schulz of Lincoln, NE; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 4 step-children: Stuart Huber and special friend, Margarita Tonjes of Irene, Dianna (Steve) Hampton of Colorado Springs, CO, Donna (Don) Young of Sioux Falls and Bruce Huber of Irene; 11 step-grandchildren; 18 step-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Elva; second wife, Gladys; 3 sisters: Beulah Pickering, Flossie Wurdinger and Evelyn Pickering-Canfield; and one brother, William "Bill" Pickering.
