Kenneth L. DeJong
Kenneth L. DeJong, age 84, of Yankton, South Dakota died Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
Funeral services are 10:30 AM, Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Paul Opsahl officiating. Burial will be in the Mission Hill Cemetery in Mission Hill, South Dakota with military honors provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791 of Yankton. Visitation with the family present is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Friday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the funeral.
Pallbearers are Nick Wieseler, Jerry Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Steve Johnson, Ron Galvan and Brad Lane.
Kenneth was born January 10, 1924 in Yankton, South Dakota to Bert and Elizabeth (Braunesreither) DeJong. He grew up in Utica, South Dakota where he attended country school and then graduated from Yankton High School. After school, Kenneth joined the United States Army in 1944 and served in the European Theater during World War II. After his discharge, Kenneth moved back to Utica and farmed on the home place. He also worked for the telephone company helping establish phone lines in the area. Kenneth married Helen Nedved and from this union, two daughters were born, Donna and Karen. On August 18, 1978, he married Lola (Stanage) Lowe in Mission Hill. Kenneth retired from farming in 1988 and moved into Utica. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, camping and working with stained glass.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Lola DeJong of Yankton; daughter, Karen (Wieseler) Leraas and her husband, Dave of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren: Nick Wieseler of Yankton, Chrissey Wieseler of Sioux Falls and Jen Wieseler of Brookings; six step-children: Julie (Gary) Johnson of Wakonda, Joan (Dan) Schroeder of Crofton, NE, Jan (Marlin) Lane of Yankton, Palmer (Jan) Iverson of Oacoma, SD, Clyde Iverson of Crofton and John (Dorothy) Iverson of Wakonda; and one sister, Evelyn Stivers of Sioux City, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Joe Morrison, one sister and four brothers.
